Nintendo Confirms the Nintendo Switch Lite - A Handheld Focused Switch Console

One of this year’s worst kept secrets – thanks to a number of accessory leaks as well as the system’s backplate being pictured a few months ago – the Switch Lite has now been confirmed by Nintendo and will release later this year.

In a video released today, Yoshiaki Koizumi, General Producer of the Nintendo Switch, introduced the world to the Nintendo Switch Lite, a handheld focused console to run alongside the original model. The Switch Lite will come in three different colours: yellow, grey and turquoise and has been designed to be easily taken out and about with you; much like the Nintendo 3DS is at the moment. With their current handheld entering the final phases of its lifespan, it’s unsurprising that Nintendo is looking to capitalise on the Switch’s success by using it as the replacement portable.

Unlike the flagship console, the Lite is unable to connect to a TV via a dock and also lacks the kickstand for tabletop play. The JoyCons are also built into the unit so games like 1-2-Switch will require additional controllers to play. Koizumi also notes that the HD rumble feature and IR camera have been removed from this revision of the console.

In addition to the announced colours at launch, Nintendo has also confirmed this beautiful limited edition featuring Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Zacian and Zamazenta will release on the 8th of November 2019.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is due for release on the 20th of September 2019. No price has been confirmed for the UK just yet, but no doubt that will surface on the Nintendo website within the coming days.
