June Pokémon Direct Roundup - Pokémon Sword and Shield

Posted by: Sam Tree | 5 June 2019

Today’s Pokémon Direct has been and gone, showcasing a number of new and exciting features to come.

The direct starts with Tsunekazu Ishihara introducing the stream and a new trailer, showing more of the beautiful Galar region. Pokémon can be seen roaming the overworld and trainer battles have a lot more detail in them. Weather effects have been added along with a new battle mechanic called Dynamax; and of course, some new Pokémon were revealed.

Dynamaxing

A new mechanic that has been revealed in Pokémon Sword and Shield is called Dynamaxing. When a trainer uses the Dynamax Band, their Pokémon grows to a massive size, exponentially increasing its power. In this form its attacks are much stronger; it returns to normal after three turns, or after the battle.

Throughout the region of Galar, pillars of light can be seen in certain areas – this signals a Max Raid Battle, where four players (either local or online) can group together to take on one of these giant Pokémon. Taking it down will allow it to be captured. Certain Pokémon will only appear in the wild once its Dynamax counterpart has been defeated.

Gyms

Pokémon Gyms have made a return and are bigger than ever! In the Galar region. Pokémon battles are the biggest form of entertainment. Gym battles are often televised and battles between Gym leaders and wannabe Pokémon Champions draw in huge crowds.

The gyms have been radically redesigned and now resemble huge stadiums, to accommodate the new Dynamax battle mechanic, where players do battle with giant versions of there Pokémon.

The Wild Area

The Wild Area is the name fo the expansive land between towns in the Galar region. Here, wild Pokémon roam the land. The Pokémon that can be encountered here will change based on the weather or location. In addition, in the Wild Area trainers are able to freely rotate the camera – a first for the main Pokémon series – giving a more open world feel to the game.

Pokémon encounters will work much as they do in Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu and Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee, in the sense that the Pokémon can be seen on the world map. Some Pokémon will actively pursue the player once they see the player, while others will run away.

New Pokémon

New Pokémon native to the Galar region have been revealed. Five new Pokémon, plus the game’s Legendary Pokémon were shown. Drednaw is by far my new favourite – though Scorbunny is pretty epic. Take a look at each of the new monsters below.

Gossifleur
Category: Flowering Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′4″
Weight: 4.9 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / Regenerator

Gossifleur prefers land with clear water and air. Its pollen has a healing effect and is commonly used as a folk medicine remedy and made into a tea given to children in the Galar region when they are ill. Gossifleur travels over long distances by getting blown along by the wind. It controls the direction of its travels by twisting its body and petals.

Eldegoss
Category: Cotton Bloom Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′8″
Weight: 5.5 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / Regenerator

When Gossifleur evolves into Eldegoss, its head becomes covered in thick cotton fluff. This cotton fluff serves as a cushion that helps to protect Eldegoss’s head from damage. The tiny seeds attached to the cotton fluff are said to be highly nutritious and beneficial to both people and Pokémon. Eldegoss spreads these seeds throughout the region, making the soil of the Galar region rich in nutrients.

Wooloo
Category: Sheep Pokémon
Type: Normal
Height: 2′
Weight: 13.2 lbs.
Ability: Fluffy / Run Away

The white fur that covers Wooloo’s body grows throughout its life and will fully grow back in three months even if it has been completely shorn. The fur is used for clothing, carpets, and other goods and is very popular as a speciality product of the Galar region. Wooloo live as a herd and mimic the actions of their Trainer or herd leader. They dislike conflict, and if they need to escape from enemies, they will simply roll away.

Corviknight
Category: Raven Pokémon
Type: Flying/Steel
Height: 7′3″
Weight: 165.3 lbs.
Ability: Pressure / Unnerve

It is said that Corviknight is the strongest Pokémon living in the skies of the Galar region. It can often be seen fearlessly soaring through the air. Many say that any Pokémon foolish enough to challenge Corviknight are sent running with just a sharp glare and cry from this fearsome Pokémon. Because Corviknight possesses superb flying skills and high intelligence, many of them work for the company called Galar Taxi and help transport people from town to town.

Drednaw
Category: Bite Pokémon
Type: Water/Rock
Height: 3′3″
Weight: 254.6 lbs.
Ability: Strong Jaw / Shell Armor

The jagged fangs of the Bite Pokémon Drednaw are strong and sharp enough to bite through rock and iron. Though it has a heavy shell, its well-developed muscles allow it to move quickly. Drednaw is known to be extremely aggressive, so it takes a skilled Trainer to tame and handle this Pokémon. It seems that some Trainers will release Drednaw back into the wild once they discover they can’t handle it.

Legendary Pokémon

The two Legendary Pokémon were also revealed in a short CGI trailer. Zacian and Zamazenta. Not much is known about these two just yet.

Zacian

Zacian Zacian

Zamazenta

Zamazenda Zamazenda

The Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta are shrouded in mystery and are unknown even to those who live in the Galar region. Zacian’s attacks are so graceful that its movements captivate opponents. Holding what appears to be a sword in its mouth, Zacian’s shining blade can cut through anything. With majestic movements and what appears to be a shield covering its body, Zamazenta can turn back any attack and overwhelm any opponents that dare face it.

New Pokémon Professor, Rival and Champion

As with any new Pokémon title, we expect to see a new Professor and a new Rival. In addition, we’ve also been introduced to a few other characters that will be in the games.

Leon is the current Champion of the Galar region and has never been defeated in an official Pokémon battle. Extremely popular for his skill and personality, Leon holds the title of “the greatest Trainer in all of Galar.”

Hop is Leon’s younger brother and will become one of the player’s rivals. The player and Hop are neighbors and begin their journey to become Champion on the same day.

Professor Magnolia is the preeminent Pokémon Professor of the Galar region. The main focus of her research has been the Dynamax phenomenon.

Sonia is the granddaughter of Professor Magnolia as well as being Leon’s childhood friend. Besides being very knowledgeable and willing to offer helpful advice to the player, Sonia is also a young researcher and Professor Magnolia’s assistant.

Milo is the regions Grass Gym, showcased in the trailer. Sporting a wide-brimmed hat, with a rugby player build, Milo looks to be a formidable opponent.

Pokédex

The Pokédex in Sword and Shield is built into the player’s Rotom Phone, a device that is home to Rotom – much like in Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. In addition to serving as a Pokédex, the Rotom Phone can also be attached to the player’s bike to make it move faster on land, and even water once the bike has been modified.

Lastly, Tsunekazu Ishihara confirmed that Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be released simultaneously during a worldwide release on the 15th of November 2019.
