Nintendo Updates 3DS to Version 11.8 and Breaks Luma Custom Firmware

Posted by: Sam Tree | 31 July 2018

Although the 3DS is nearing the end of its life cycle, it would seem that Nintendo is still trying to squash any remaining bugs that may be lingering in the device’s firmware. The latest update does little more than add stability, but for those running custom firmware, it also prevents the systems from booting.

Trying to boot a console using Luma custom firmware will, for the moment, result in a “Failed to apply FIRM patch” error. Worry not though as Aurora Wright has a working fix in place which will no doubt go live on the official Luma Github shortly.

If you have already updated and need access to your console the easiest fix is to replace your boot.firm file with the one from here. Please note though that this release should be considered as unstable.

For those of you interested in the official patch notes for version 11.8, they can be found below.

Main changes for version 11.8.0-41U

Update released: July 30th, 2018

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience
